A compact folded chair may still be awkward to turn through a doorway, and a slim folded table may need a larger clear area while its legs move. The word “foldable” does not describe those spaces.

Identify what each dimension describes

When asking a seller, specify the orientation: standing upright on its intended resting points, lying flat, or another manufacturer-approved position. A list of three numbers without an orientation can lead to a false comparison.
Measure the storage destination first
Measure the usable opening, internal depth and height of the destination. Include door hinges, handles, skirting and shelves that reduce usable space. If furniture will stand in a room rather than a cupboard, record the boundary it must stay within and the access that must remain available.

Add the source of every number: your measurement, a manufacturer’s drawing or a seller’s written answer. Mark missing dimensions as unknown. A blank field is more useful than an estimate that later gets mistaken for a confirmed specification.
Check the folding sequence, not just the end position
Read or watch the exact model’s operating instructions to identify which part moves first and where the user stands. A tabletop may tip outward before the legs close. A chair may need to be lifted or turned. Check that this sequence can happen in the available space without working over the balcony edge.
If viewing the item in person, ask for a normal demonstration and note the space used. Do not improvise a different folding sequence or test a locking mechanism by forcing it. If the instructions require removing a cushion or accessory first, include that step in the storage plan.
A worked two-chair comparison
This fictional example compares two unbranded chair options for an indoor cupboard with 45 centimeters of usable width. The seller confirms Option A is 19 centimeters thick when closed in its permitted upright position. Two placed side by side occupy 38 centimeters before any separation or handling allowance. The numerical remainder is 7 centimeters.
Option B is 24 centimeters thick in the same orientation. Two occupy 48 centimeters, so they do not fit side by side within the 45-centimeter space. A claim that they “nest” would need its own confirmed two-chair dimensions and storage instructions; subtracting an imagined overlap is not a valid solution.
Option A remains only a candidate. The household must still check cupboard depth, closed height, projections and whether either chair can be retrieved without dragging the other out. The 7-centimeter remainder is arithmetic, not a recommended handling clearance.
Try the trip from balcony to storage
Record the narrowest point along the route, including the doorway with the door in its normal open position. Consider the turn immediately after it. A long folded table may pass straight through an opening yet fail to turn toward the cupboard.
A lightweight cardboard outline can help reveal an obvious turning conflict, but it does not reproduce the item’s weight, grip or balance. Arrange suitable help for heavy furniture. Avoid storing pieces where they obstruct exits, required access or equipment ventilation, and do not assume a balcony railing is a storage support.
Include the condition in which furniture is stored
The TÄRNÖ care guidance recommends a cool, dry indoor place where possible. For outdoor covered storage, it calls for removing excess rain or snow and allowing air circulation to avoid condensation. Treat those as instructions for that product, then check the care directions for the furniture you actually choose.
Provide a destination for damp cushions or covers rather than pressing them between folded pieces. Note whether the set can be put away by its regular user at the frequency expected. If storage requires rearranging the whole apartment every evening, a smaller permanent set may be more practical than a larger folding one.
Your finished comparison should answer four questions: does the set fit when closed, can it be folded normally, can it travel to storage, and can it be retrieved again? All four matter more than a single attractive “space-saving” measurement.
